Chapter Three - My Coincidence

Did I hear that right? Is Kai's friend really that English guy I bumped into this morning?

"Luke. Luke!" I blinked and my widened my eyes in surprise as Kai stared at me concernedly. "Is something wrong?" he asked worriedly. I shook my head and looked away as I did so to avoid Kai from seeing my more-than-flustered expression.

God, I seriously need to get a grip.

"Anyway, he's coming down here later so we can grab a bite and head home," the ebony-haired young man continued as he whipped up an Americano and served it to a waiting customer.

"Home?" I questioned curiously.

He nodded, bearing no idea about what I was implying. "We're roommates," he explained with a smile. "We get along very well." He seemed genuinely pleased and I stifled a chuckle as I remembered the days when he used to live with the rest of us and left in a rush after the great hangover of '09.

I didn't ask any further questions. After all, I was going to get to meet the brunette at a later point anyway. Feeling a tad relieved, I whistled as I focused on work and waited for time to fly by.

"Lukie!"

I almost dropped the cup I was holding as I immediately swerved in shock to see Charlotte burst through the door, clutching a Chanel bag and sporting a Marilyn Monroe hairstyle that appeared to require at least ten bottles of hairspray.

"Charlotte," I greeted back through gritted teeth. "Glad to see that you're the same as ever," I dryly remarked.

She ignored my distasteful comment and leaned against the counter, pushing past the line of customers. "Oh, mon dieu, you look like such a mess without me!" she exclaimed with a humorous giggle.

I turned to notice that both Lyle and Kai were gaping at us for obvious reasons; Lyle being enchanted by the blonde bombshell and Kai being dumbstruck and puzzled at the sight of me being able to withstand ten long seconds with what to him appeared to be the very accurate portrayal of Lady Catherine from Pride and Prejudice.

"Charlotte, Lyle and Kai. Lyle and Kai, Charlotte," I bluntly introduced as I handed a receipt to a rather irritated customer.

"It's nice to meet you," Kai greeted politely and reached his hand out. However, as she was about to accept his handshake, Lyle's hand pushed past his and took a hold of hers.

"Jacob Lyle, my fair lady," he greeted with a flirtatious wink, giving me the sudden urge to gag.

She giggled in amusement and playfully shook his hand. "Charmed."

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to work," I interrupted and shoved my arm in between them, unable to bear any more horrific flirting. "Charlotte, sit down and wait for me, my shift finishes in ten minutes." She hesitantly obliged and left the counter, but not before sending another suggestive smile in Lyle's direction.

God, I might actually puke.

"So, I take that she's not your girlfriend, huh?" Lyle asked with an enthusiastic grin as he wiped a coffee mug with a piece of cloth.

"You really think I'd date a woman like that?" I snorted, offended by just the thought.

"No, didn't think so." He continued to clean the mug until I was convinced that he was just trying to kill some time. "I'm surprised that you're even friends," he remarked.

"We used to be in the same gang during high school," I simply explained.

He raised an eyebrow in curiosity and slight surprise, not because of me being in a gang, but her. "Gang, huh? Sounds just like you. I can totally picture you beating the crap out of a bunch of prefects," he remarked with a chuckle. "Still, though. I'd have thought of her as one of those cheerleader-type girls."

"No, she's pretty hardcore once you get rid of those ten layers of makeup."

Lyle grinned and opened his mouth to say something when we were both distracted from the sound of the door opening and a familiar figure hesitantly taking a step inside the café, glancing around as if he was unsure if he was in the right place. I felt my jaw drop as I immediately recognized that old-fashioned sports coat and that floppy chocolate-coloured hair. It was when he turned to face my direction that I caught sight of those dazzling cobalt blue orbs.

"Excuse me." He walked over to the counter and smiled politely. Face-to-face with him, I was able to closely examine his pretty, charming features. He was shorter than me, but only by an inch or two. "Certainly a kissable height," I thought and tried not to grin.

"Does Kai work here?" he asked, not feeling the need to mention his surname since Kai was a pretty uncommon name already.

I felt my throat dry up again, merely upon hearing his smooth English accent. "Y-yeah, he's in the back." I gestured at the closed locker room and he nodded.

"Thank you. I'll be waiting for him, if you don't mind." I noticed that his gaze at my face wasn't breaking away, which made me feel rather uncomfortable, just like when we first ran into each other.

Doesn't he recognize me? No, I guess not; after all, we just bumped into each other.

"No, that's fine," I assured, unnerved by his stare. "Is something the matter?" I finally questioned, causing his eyes to light up in surprise.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he apologized and blushed slightly. "It's just that - you look familiar," he explained with an embarrassed chuckle, the same nervous laugh I heard from him when he apologized after our collision.

I saw this as the perfect opportunity to hand him back the book and formally introduce myself so I abruptly instructed Lyle to take over for a second whilst I excused myself to the locker room. "Kai, your friend's here," I mentioned to the half-sleeping young man on the bench as I opened the door to my locker and grabbed the book inside.

He immediately sat up in surprise and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Oh, um, thank you," he said with a drowsily flushed expression and got up to follow me out of the locker room.

The brunet's face immediately lit up upon catching sight of Kai's face. "Kai!" he called with an enthusiastic wave. "I've been waiting for ages!" he exclaimed and pouted cutely.

Ages? You weren't even here two minutes ago.

"Sorry, sorry," the ebony-haired young man apologized as he grabbed his jacket from the coat rack.

Crap, they're about to leave. Quick, give him the book!

"Hey, you." I suddenly found myself grabbing the Englishman by the sleeve, triggering a stir of surprise of confusion from him, Kai, Lyle and even Charlotte, who'd lowered her newspaper to see what the commotion was about. He winced upon hearing the threateningly demanding tone of my voice and I immediately regretted calling him in such a way. Nevertheless, I tried to brush it off and reluctantly handed him the book I was holding onto for quite some time.

"I believe this belongs to you," I stated as it landed into his hands with a soft thump.

"Oh." It took him a few seconds to piece everything together, but I was patient. "You're -"

"The person you bumped into this morning? Yeah, that would be me," I finished for him with an amused grin.

He blushed cutely and bashfully lifted his book to semi-cover his face as he continued to smile sheepishly. "I remember now," he murmured. He then lowered his book and held out his hand for me to shake in an attempt to regain composure. "My name is William Angel, but please, call me Will."

I grinned. An angel indeed.

"Luke Schneider," I replied and took his hand, my breath feeling tight as I did so.

"How wonderful it is to meet you," he remarked with a gleeful smile and I felt a sudden rush of heat rise to my cheeks as I was smitten by his exaggerated statement, which because of him made it seem completely believable. "And thank you kindly for retrieving my most treasured book."

I blushed uncontrollably; the way he made such over-the-top comments in such a casual manner was so goddamn attractive.

I was about to say something when Kai cut in and I had to resist the urge to punch the kid in the face. "Will, we should get going or we'll miss Sherlock," he mentioned worriedly and gestured at his watch.

"You mean you'll miss Sherlock," the brunet corrected teasingly. He then turned to face me again and nodded. "It was delightful to meet you, I hope we run into each other again." I grinned, amused by his unintended pun.

Oh, we will. I'll make sure of that.

As they left the café, Charlotte got up from her seat and approached me with an unnerving smirk plastered on her face. "So…" she drawled. "What was that I just witnessed?" she questioned, her expression showing that she already knew everything and just wanted to hear my version of the story.

"He's just some guy I ran into this morning and I picked up a book he dropped," I simply explained.

"Some guy, huh?" She raised her nails to eye-level and casually remarked, "And were you ever going to mention the fact that you've got a giant crush on him?"

My face flushed a bright shade of scarlet as I immediately freaked out and pulled her aside to avoid Lyle from hearing any of it. Luckily, the blonde jock was busy chatting up yet another female customer.

"Yeah, go on and broadcast it to the entire world, why don't you?" I snapped with a frown.

She couldn't stop giggling as she covered her mouth with her hands and tried to regain composure. "Oh, my god," she laughed. "I've never seen you behave in such a way. You're acting just like a thirteen-year-old girl!" she exclaimed.

"Tch," I scoffed and wiped the counter with a tablecloth. "Yeah, fine, whatever. So I kind of like him, what's the big deal?" I made sure to keep my voice down in case Lyle overheard my comment. He was always the type to freak out over 'homosexual tendencies'; it might've been one of the reasons as to why he and Kai never seemed to get along. "Besides, it's not like I know whether he's straight or not."

"Definitely not," she confirmed and embarrassingly enough, I felt my heart flutter. But before I could even smile, I found myself being grabbed by the collar and pulled to face Charlotte at eye-level. "You are going to tell me every little detail of this 'fateful encounter'," she commanded with a menacing grin.

I sighed miserably; this was going to take a while.

"So that's basically it," I explained and exhaled tiredly as Charlotte and I walked down the avenue leading to my apartment. A crisp spring breeze nipped at my cheeks and I slid my hands into my coat pockets.

"Hmm. Still, it's weird to see you so worked up over some guy you just met," the extravagant blonde remarked and thought quietly to herself for a minute or two before speaking up. "Wait, you said something about a bookmark, didn't you? Did you get to see what chapter he was on?"

I frowned, puzzled that she would ask such a question but answered, "Er, yeah. He'd just begun reading Cinderella." I couldn't help but ask, "Why?"

"Just wondering." She stifled a giggle and smiled to herself. "Besides, you'll get to have a topic of conversation the next time you meet," she pointed out.

"Oh." I grinned; Charlotte wasn't actually a bookworm like Kai, but she was a genius when it came to matters like this. "Wait, how am I going to meet him again, if ever?" I asked worriedly.

"Don't worry, I've got it," she assured with a confident wink and I didn't ask any further questions. After all, she looked like she was damn well sure on what she was doing. "I'll make sure your little Cendrillon doesn't escape after midnight."
